Today's DWI Headlines

Did You Know?
  • Alcoholic beverages - drinks containing ethanol.
  • BAC blood alcohol content legal limit - in the United States is commonly 0.08 (i.e., 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood). Some states include a lesser charge - often known as driving while impaired - at a BAC of, say, 0.05 or above but less than the legal limit for the more serious charge.
  • Breathalyzer Myths - a common myth is that breath testers can be fooled (to make one's blood alcohol content appear lower) by using certain substances. An episode of the Discovery Channel's MythBusters tested substances usually recommended in this practice -- such as breath mints, mouthwash, and onion -- and found them to be ineffective. Adding an odor to mask the smell of alcohol might fool a person, but does not change the actual alcohol concentration in the body or on the breath.
  • Field sobriety test - a series of standardized physical motor skills and mental tests performed by police officers who have stopped a suspected drunk driver to better at determining the level of impairment.
  • DUI DWI Penalties - Some U.S. states also increase the penalties for drunk driving (even to the point of making it a felony) if certain other aggravating circumstances besides a very high BAC are present.
