Did You Know?
  • U.S. Legal limit - All states have an illegal limit of 0.08%. Some states also include a lesser charge, driving while impaired, at a BAC of around 0.05%. Also, in all states, drivers under the drinking age of 21 have committed a drunk driving offense if they have any alcohol in their blood (set at .00%, .01% or .02% to be meaningful).
  • Driving after consuming alcohol - generally not illegal in the U.S. unless the driver’s ability to drive safely is impaired as defined by law.
  • Unit of alcohol (U.K.) - equivalent to 10 milliliters (or approximately 8 grams) of pure ethanol, the active chemical ingredient in alcoholic beverages. The number of units of alcohol in a drink can be determined by multiplying the volume of the drink (in milliliters) by its percentage ABV, and dividing by 1000.
  • MADD - Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) - a government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and the licensing of drivers (e.g., by issuing driver's licenses).
