Today's DWI Headlines

Did You Know?
  • No contest plea - a plea of nolo contendere means that the defendant does not admit the charge, but does not dispute it either. This is also called a plea of no contest or, more informally, a nolo plea.
  • Criminal charges for traffic accidents - might include (but not limited to) driving under the influence of alcohol, assault with a deadly weapon, manslaughter, or murder, depending on the circumstances.
  • Breathalyzer Myths - a common myth is that breath testers can be fooled (to make one's blood alcohol content appear lower) by using certain substances. An episode of the Discovery Channel's MythBusters tested substances usually recommended in this practice -- such as breath mints, mouthwash, and onion -- and found them to be ineffective. Adding an odor to mask the smell of alcohol might fool a person, but does not change the actual alcohol concentration in the body or on the breath.
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - NHTSA, is a U.S. Government agency, part of the Department of Transportation, responsible for setting safety standards and verifying compliance by automobile manufacturers.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) - a government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and the licensing of drivers (e.g., by issuing driver's licenses).
